The activity consists of an ascent to the summit of Osorno Volcano (2,652 meters above sea level), located within Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park in the Los Lagos Region of Chile. Access is via the road to the Osorno Volcano Ski Center in the Ensenada sector, where the approach and ascent begin along the standard climbing route.
The expedition is conducted as a single-day activity and includes an estimated ascent time of 6 to 8 hours, depending on weather conditions, terrain, and the pace of the group. The route covers approximately 11 to 12 kilometers, including switchbacks that help optimize effort, reduce fatigue, and improve safety on steeper sections.
During the ascent, participants travel across volcanic terrain consisting of loose volcanic ash, rock, snow, and, depending on the season, sections of ice. The route features moderate to steep slopes and exposes participants to the typical hazards of high-mountain environments, including rapidly changing weather, low temperatures, strong winds, intense UV radiation, rockfall, and unstable volcanic terrain.
The descent follows the same route used for the ascent and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. If weather, terrain, or group safety requires it, the guide may adjust the pace of the expedition, schedule additional rest stops, or decide to turn back before reaching the summit.
This is a mountaineering activity of moderate to high physical difficulty and is recommended for participants with good physical fitness and previous mountain hiking experience. Depending on seasonal conditions, the use of technical mountaineering equipment—including a helmet, crampons, ice axe, gaiters, and appropriate high-mountain clothing—is mandatory. All participants must follow the instructions of the lead guide at all times and comply with the company's established safety procedures.
Participants must be between 17 and 65 years of age, be in excellent physical condition, and have previous experience in mountain hiking or comparable activities. The activity is not suitable for individuals with acrophobia (fear of heights), heart conditions, or physical disabilities that could compromise their safety during the expedition.
Participants must also be capable of carrying a backpack weighing between 3 and 9 kg for extended periods of hiking, including sections of up to 90 minutes without rest, depending on terrain and weather conditions.
